( Turkish below… )
Botox is a treatment that temporarily relaxes muscles and is used in controlled doses. Its active ingredient is botulinum toxin type A, which temporarily blocks the signals from the nerves telling the muscles to contract. As a result, the activity of the targeted muscle is reduced. The effect is not permanent; over time, the nerve-muscle connection is restored.
We mostly know Botox for cosmetic purposes, to reduce wrinkles. However, it is also used for medical purposes, such as chronic migraines, teeth grinding and certain muscle spasms.
What matters here is not Botox itself, but using it at the right time, in the right amount and in the right place. If it is applied to the wrong area or in an unsuitable amount, unintended muscles can also be affected. For example, drooping eyebrows can occur after Botox around the forehead and eye area. The muscle becomes weaker as a result of the toxin and may no longer perform its function properly.
So, can we have Botox in organisations?
I think we can.
In organisations, we can think of Botox as an external consultancy being injected into the organisation to solve a particular problem or achieve a particular result quickly.
Sometimes this intervention genuinely works. The desired result is achieved, the problem is solved and the organisation sees a visible improvement in the short term.
But sometimes something else happens.
The organisation’s own improvement muscle becomes weaker.
An external consultant is, by definition, something coming from outside the organisation. This does not mean consultancy is bad. Quite the opposite. The right expertise, brought in at the right time, can make a significant contribution to an organisation.
But how that external intervention becomes part of the organisation’s own system is critical.
Because if the consultant keeps solving the problems, while the people within the organisation are not learning how to solve those problems themselves, we may actually be weakening the improvement muscle rather than strengthening it.
The improvement we see can then be similar to the cosmetic effect of Botox: visible, quick and effective.
But for that effect to last, the organisation needs its own internal mechanism to sustain the change.
Otherwise, the consultant leaves.
The project closes.
The action list is completed.
The report is produced.
And after a while, the system starts returning to where it was before.
Just like the effect of Botox eventually wears off.
So the real question should not be:
What did the consultant do to the organisation?
It should be:
How much did the consultant improve the organisation’s ability to improve itself?
This is where Continuous Improvement becomes different.
Continuous Improvement is not about solving a few problems or successfully completing a project. As the name suggests, it requires continuity.
That is why improvement needs to become a capability within the organisation itself, rather than something that is repeatedly injected from the outside.
Toyota has a very strong example of this approach through Toyota Kata. Rather than having managers or external experts continuously provide the solutions, Toyota Kata focuses on developing people’s own problem-solving and improvement habits within the organisation.
The aim is not only to solve today’s problem.
It is to enable the organisation to solve the next problem itself.
With this approach, improvement does not remain the responsibility of a particular department or a small number of experts. It spreads across different levels of the organisation. The source of improvement and change reaches all the way to where value is actually created.
Consultancy, on the other hand, often focuses heavily on senior and middle management. If the people at the lower levels of the organisation do not become part of the transformation, the result can become a system that is designed from the top but never truly lived at the bottom.
And then we come back to the same question:
Have we created a one-off action list, or a continuously working improvement system?
Of course, there are times when every organisation needs external support.
Just as the body may sometimes need medical support for something that cannot be addressed simply through healthy eating, sleep and exercise, organisations may also need external expertise, a different perspective or a fundamental change to their systems.
The point is not to be against consultancy.
It is about what the consultancy leaves behind.
An intervention carried out at the right time, in the right amount and in the right place can strengthen an organisation’s improvement muscle.
Applied in the wrong way, it can do the opposite and weaken the organisation’s ability to improve itself.
Therefore, the output of good consultancy should not only be solved problems, presentations or closed actions.
The real output should be the organisation’s ability to become better by itself after the consultant has left.
Because true Continuous Improvement is not a solution repeatedly injected from the outside.
It is a function that lives within the organisation.
Botox wears off.
But a well-established improvement culture keeps renewing itself.
Etken maddesi botulinum toksini tip A’dır.
Elbette her organizasyonun dönem dönem dışarıdan desteğe ihtiyacı olabilir.
